Select an instance of the family in the drawing area, and click Modify <Element> tab Mode panel (Edit Family). I have now come to change some of the diameters of the piles / pilecaps, but when I do this, it loses the pile ref information.

After the Load, you then need to go to the appropriate tool (Door, Window, or Component) to place an instance of that family. Dave Plumb.
